What do I need to become a Corrections Officer for Jefferson County?

QUALIFICATIONS

On the date of the examination:

  • Must be a citizen of the United States
  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED
  • Must be at least 19 years of age


Prior to appointment:

  • Must pass NYS Civil Service Exam
  • Must be at least 20 years of age
  • Pass a medical physical
  • Pass a background check
  • Pass a psychological test


On the date of appointment:

  • Must be a resident of Jefferson County
  • Must possess a valid NYS Driver’s License.


Special/Necessary Requirements:

  • No conviction of a felony (Conviction of a misdemeanor may bar appointment.)
  • Successful completion of the NYS DCJS’s Basic Course for Correctional Officers within 1 year of appointment.
  • Successful completion of the J.C.S.O. Field Training Program.

BENEFITS

Salary:

  • Over $42,000 per year (See county web-site for actual salary amount)
  • Pay increases based on contract
  • Longevity benefits after 10, 15, 20, & 25 years of service
  • Shift differential pay of 5%

Vacation: After 1 year of service, you receive 13 days of paid vacation and up to 28 days after 20 years of service.

Holidays:

  • 12 paid holidays each year
  • 6 holidays are paid at time and one-half, and the other 6 are paid at double time.

Health: Employee is entitled to enroll in the County Health Insurance Plan after 6 months of continuous service.

Sick Leave: Sick leave is credited at a rate of 4.6 hours per bi-weekly payroll period.

Retirement: As of January 01, 2015-- NYS Employees Retirement System (Tier 6).
